My makeup sits differently during winter, help!
Are you noticing changes in how your makeup looks and wears during winter? A dull complexion, concealer settling into fine lines with dehydrated and tingling lips? Winter temperatures and ensuing bad habits (like overuse of heaters, long hot showers, not drinking enough water etc etc) leaves skin feeling parched and your usual makeup glow looking a little lackluster.
A few simple tweaks can make all the difference. We asked professional makeup artist Yolanda Lukowski to share minor adjustments for a more radiant, comfortable result.
Focus on skin prep
Winter makeup starts with skincare. If you find that your foundation is sitting on top of dry patches on the skin, ensure your skin is well prepared beforehand with a hydrating serum or lipid-rich moisturiser to deliver a more nourished, smoother result.
Exfoliate with caution
Flaky skin is one of the biggest reasons makeup looks uneven in winter. Gently exfoliate once or twice a week to smooth away dead skin cells without compromising your skin barrier. Excessive exfoliation can weaken the skin barrier and increase dryness and sensitivity.
Mist on repeat
Keep a hydration misting spray on hand for regular application through the day to instantly hydrate and awaken your complexion.
Switch up your formulas
Swap out matte and powdery makeup formulas for lighter and skincare infused products that leave a dewy, glowing result. Apply complexion products in thinner layers for a fresher look, without product settling into fine lines.
Nourish your lips
Winter is also a great time to keep lip balms everywhere! One in your bag, on your desk and in your car to always remind you to reapply as often as needed and always under lipstick for a smoother finish.
Eye cream focus
The delicate eye area often becomes drier in winter, making concealer more prone to caking and creasing. A lightweight, hydra-smoothing eye cream can help create a smoother base and prevent makeup from settling into fine lines.
Adjust your colour palette
Winter is a great time to embrace richer, warmer makeup tones. Soft berry lips, rosy blushes, bronze eyes and subtle luminous finishes can bring warmth back to the complexion when skin naturally appears paler.
