The key to healthy nails… it’s not what you think!
What springs to mind when you think about nail care? Is it strength, shape, texture, length or condition? Often overlooked and critical to nail health is the cuticle area.
Cuticles provide a protective rim that frames the nail plate and protects the hardening nail against infection. Unless this tissue remains soft and pliable, it can grow onto the surface of the nail where is becomes unsightly, splits into painful hang nails and even impedes nail growth.
Understanding how to care for your cuticles can make a significant difference not only to the appearance of your hands, but also to the long-term health of your nails. When the cuticle is healthy and intact, it helps nails grow stronger, reduces the risk of infections and negates ridge formation.
Follow these essential cuticle care tips at home for healthy nails:
#1 – NEVER cut cuticles
By far the biggest mistake you can make. They will grow back stronger, faster, harder and thicker. Instead use a cuticle remover to gently dissolve them, then roll your cuticles back with a soft wooden cuticle stick. Never push them back using sharp instruments, which can damage the nail root and make them grow back bumpy. Cutting cuticles breaks the protective seal, leading to infection.

#2 – Hydrate daily
Don’t ignore dry cuticles. This skin is delicate and loses moisture quickly, especially with frequent handwashing. Use a cuticle oil or cream to keep the skin soft and flexible. Hydrated cuticles are less likely to crack, peel, or form hangnails. Think of hydrated cuticles like a frame to a painting, providing a well-groomed contour to the nails.
#3 – Hygiene all the way
Keep the nail contour exfoliated and meticulously clean to protect against bacteria growth and infection plus beautifying the hands in the process. Brush nails daily, including the cuticle area and under the tip of the nail. Make use of a nail exfoliant to remove impurities, smooth the nail and soften the cuticle area.
# 4 - Avoid Picking
Picking at dry skin around the nails can cause small tears that lead to painful hangnails and even infection. If you notice rough edges, trim them carefully and sparingly instead of pulling.
Cuticles are the perfect example of where function meets aesthetics. Smooth, groomed cuticles will always make your nails look better. Make this a part of your daily protocol and you will notice the difference in just a week or two.
